Uniforms of Colonial NSW

Post  Sean on Sun 25 Mar 2012, 7:56 am

The 10th plate of this CD shows the band uniform of the Sydney Battalion of the NSW Volunteer Rifles. I originally thought the uniform was dark blue but have found a newspaper reference siting a green uniform, as shown below.

Is there good documentation for those cuffs? They look unique.

Yes they are unusual, but follow the pattern worn by the Sydney Battalion of the NSW Vol Rifles. A contemporary photograph shows the cuff pattern of the early band and battalion. Later a more subtle crow's foot knot was worn by this and other Corps.
I try to base all my illustrations on photographs or dress regulations. However, it is difficult with early Australian colonial uniforms as few regulations were written and hardly any photographs remain.
