Facings for 51st Sikhs

Post  pittorf on Wed 04 Jan 2012, 2:22 am

I am painting a pipe band of the 51st Sikhs, FF circa 1905 and need some help on facings. I am using yellow for the collar, pointed cuffs and piping down the front of the tunic. Question: Are the shoulder straps yellow, piped yellow or just plain khaki?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Terry - the 51st Sikhs had yellow shoulder straps on their khaki drab tunics, along with the piping and pointed cuffs that you describe. You probably have access to the A.C. Lovett coloured plates showing several of the FF regiments in their drab full dress with coloured facings - the pattern was standard for this class of Indian infantry during the period. The lower part of the fringe to the khaki turban was also yellow for the 51st but the kullah (pointed cap) was red. The bag of the pipes was green in Lovett illustrations of this regiment dated both 1890 and 1910. No tartan was worn by the pipers of the 51st.

Hope this helps.

...Thank you very much for your help...the little "piffer" band will now be painted correctly!
