I live on Long Island.

Try:
The Military Bookman
55 East 52nd Street (Manhattan)
http://www.militarybookman.com/

Unfortunately this is one of the only ones left. Most of the other specifically military history bookstores have closed with the economic recession. Heck, even Borders Books is gone Crying or Very sad
There are a few Barnes & Noble's in New York City that have extensive military history sections, but in general Borders was much better for military history than Barnes & Noble is.

In terms of museums:

NYC Harbor Defense Museum
230 Sheridan Loop (Brooklyn) - located inside Fort Hamilton so you WILL need to show VALID PHOTO ID to the MPs at the gate. They will then direct you to the museum. It's primarily coastal artillery themed with an emphasis on the World War II era coastal defenses but does have exhibits related to the 1776 Battle of Long Island (aka the Battle of Brooklyn Heights), and the New York City Draft Riots of 1863. It's been an active duty US Army post since the 1820s so it has alot of history. In fact, I would call before you even come to NY to see what kind of photo ID they will accept, their website and contact information is here: http://www.harbordefensemuseum.com/

USS Intrepid Air, Sea, Space Museum
1 Intrepid Square (Manhattan)
It's mostly space and aviation related. Dozens of aircraft and helicopters. It's all located on the aircraft carrier that's bears it's name but it has been so heavily modified that you wouldent even know your on an aircraft carrier.

Their is also a pretty extensive museum at the US Military Academy in West Point though that is a bit outside NYC.

Thank you. I had heard of Military Bookman so the detail is appreciated.
Also going to Boston, any recommendations for there?
