Philippine Constabulary Handbook from 1901 (contains uniform and rank insignia details)

I found this online today while searching for rank insignia details for the Philippine Constabulary.

They wore a really distinctive gray uniform between 1901 and their adoption of the standard US Army uniforms and ranks in 1907. The handbook is a real gem Smile

I wonder how volumes the modern manual has compared to this one?

This photo is titled American officers of the Philippine police force 1905

I find it ironic that rather than use the title of Island Constabulary, they chose Insular Constabulary.
Yes, the work does mean belonging to an Island, although it can also refer to someone of an island mentality and narrow minded.
Not an ideal title for a police force.

From the hand book;

An Insular Constabulary is hereby established under the general supervision of the Civil Governor for the purpose of better maintaining peace, law and order in the various provinces of the Philippine Islands.

The office of chief of Insular Constabulary is hereby created, the incumbent of which shall be appointed by the Civil Governor by and with the consent of the Commission.

The Insular Constabulary shall consist of not less than fifteen privates, one sergeant and one corporal, and not more than one hundred and fifty privates, four sergeants and eight corporals for each province. The sergeants, corporals and privates to
serve in any province shall be selected from the residents of such province. They shall be enlisted for two years unless sooner discharged.
