Who, and when, are these African NCO's?

See Black African NCOs with Officer for more pictures and close-ups.

Who are these men? My feeling is West African, around 1920-30ish.

King's African Rifles

Post  Sean on Mon 04 Apr 2011, 4:13 pm

Not certain, but I believe they are King's African Rifles from 1913/14.
The 'kepi' does not bare badges that came after the war, they had numbers pre-war. The rifles are Martinis, again used pre-war and in the first few years. The officer's jacket is open but not in the same style as seen later, introduced in he 1910s.
Certainly British colonial, and the WAFF didn't wear this cap.
What do you think?

Your facts definitely support your case

Thank you. Your facts definitely support your case. I was just guessing. I will have to peruse KAR photos to become more familiar with the possibilities.

King's African Rifles

Post  Per Finsted on Fri 13 May 2011, 3:48 am

A very interesting photo!

I have asked my good friend Harry Fecitt, who is an East African resource person, if he could provide some comments to the photo. Harry told me that “the caps appear to be general fatigue caps worn by KAR, and we may be looking at a passing-out parade of a group of KAR junior NCOs.

If they had been drawn from different units (e.g.: if this happened in the massive KAR camp at Mbagathi, Nairobi) then that would account for the different uniform styles.”

Best regards,

The Dog

The dog resembles a German Shepard which was common in the middle Africa used by the police force.
