Post  sbintayab on Wed 29 Dec 2010, 6:25 pm

Hi
I'm very much interested on the rank insignia of British army. Can anyone give me the information on the rank insignia of British army officers from 1740 to 1800?
Regards
Shams

I believe it revolved around a system of button placing and epaulettes worn on a particular shoulder.

According to Franlin, nil

Post  mconrad on Fri 31 Dec 2010, 2:31 am

According to Franklin ("British Napoleonic Uniforms"), in 1800 British army officers had only one thing to worry about regarding rank distinctions: whether to wear one epaulette or two. Captains and below wore one, majors and above wore two. Exceptions were all officers in grenadier and light companies, who all wore two.

pre Napoleonic

Before and during the 1700’s the ranking system was a little less uniform and prone to differ depending on the commander’s purse strings and the ability of the officers to pay.
Basically the duty officer wore a sash and carried a spontoon/half-pike before the mid 1700’s.
The warrant of 1768 as far as I know, and I don’t know much, was the real attempt at regulating officer ranks and removing some of the excesses of commanding officers.
Officers uniforms came in line with the other ranks and in general buttons and lace on hats was either gold or silver according to regimental design and it was left up to the commanding officer as to whether or not lace was placed upon the uniform.
Epaulettes were gold or silver lace/embroidery with a fringe.
Right shoulder for company officers of the line and both shoulders for grenadiers, later light infantry officers wore them on both shoulders also,
Crimson sash around the waist and a gorget to match the colour of buttons and lace/embroidery.

Pre Napoleonic

Shams
The information pre Napoleonic is a little bit here and there from several books. Many of the books are devoted to wars in general such as Blandford’s Uniforms of the Seven Years War 1756-63 which although more or less fits the period you want has mentioned around nine states with little space for great detail on ranks.
Also Michael Barthorp’s books on the British Infantry and Cavalry since 1660 does have some information regarding pre Napoleonic ranks, but well hidden within the text.
Maybe some of the Osprey Men at Arms have the information you require?
Would you wish for me to forward onto you pages from Blandfords Uniforms of the Seven Years War 1756-63 that mention the British?

This should help, first eighteen pages taken from the army section of Badges & Insignia of the British Armed Services by May, Carmen and Tanner. I’ve found the book quite good but some complain of inaccuracies within it.
If the link goes to a blacked out page click on the blue link to be re-directed to the page, also there is a ‘download all files’ option on the page but just in case there are problems with that option all the page links are listed below.
Anyway, they may answer your question.

Seven years War

Shams.
Send me a private message with your email address and I shall forward scans direct by email.
Let me know if you just want the British uniforms, cover to cover would be 114 scans!

Don't post your email address in the general forum as it could, and would, be farmed by anyone who cares to fill your inbox with junk mail selling pills.

Lace facings

Post  wfrad on Mon 29 Jul 2013, 8:03 am

Put this here because these are from for this period.
Taken from British Military Uniforms 1768-96 , Hew Strachan.
Problem with many books on pre 1800 uniforms is The lack of positive information regarding lace and other accessories.  What the regulations state and what was available gave rise too many variations and a 'make do culture'.
For example the 12ths lace I have used yellow which was apparently used from1742-68, according to Franklin the black, yellow and crimson lace was used from1793-1815.
Another reason for using yellow is the plate showing the 12 seems to be lace of a single colour, not the tri coloured lace mentioned in the text.
No doubt there will be other errors but I hope it gives a general idea.
