Paraguayan Uniforms after 1870

Post  Abadu on Sun 03 Oct 2010, 12:10 am

Hey guys, here is another tough question: Does anyone knows what uniforms would the Paraguayan army have worn after the War of the Triple Alliance? Thanks already.

Hi Abadu. Prior to 1916 the Paraguayan Army wore all blue dress uniforms with Prussian spiked helmets. Facing colours (collar, cuffs and trouser stripes) were scarlet for infantry, crimson for cavalry and dark red for artillery - which cannot have made for easily distinguishing different branches. Peaked caps of dark blue were also worn. Officers had fringed epaulettes of German style plus a silver, red and light blue waist sash. Trousers were blue or white according to season. High boots were worn. In short an Imperial German model was followed - dating back to both a pre-1914 military mission and the establishment of a Chilean influenced Military School in 1905.

Following the War of the the Triple Alliance, Paraguay was occupied until 1876 and for the remainder of the 19th Century the army consisted of only a few widely dispersed company sized units along the frontier and in the capital. The uniforms of this small and essentially non-professional force may have included the shakos, red blouses and white pantaloons characteristic of the 1864-70 war but are more likely to have been of dark blue French style with kepis.

Thank you very much, I wasn't finding anything about it! Also, did Paraguay had any guard regiment with a distinctive uniform in this period?

Hello Abadu - it apparently took the Pargauayan Army some time to rebuild after the catastropic War of the Triple Alliance. By 1900 it comprised only a single infantry battalion plus several independent companies, two or three squadrons of cavalry and two field batteries. This small force was expanded in 1905 and again after 1908. However there is no record throughout this period of a specific Guard regiment, although mention is made that the units stationed in Concepcion performed some ceremonial functions.
