"In Wehr und Waffen" - German army c. 1910
A huge oversized book. No date (!), but apparently post Russo-Japanese war, so I guess circa 1910. From a time when Germany possessed the world's most powerful, efficient, and technically advanced army, with an economy to match, and there was much speculation as to Germany's future perhaps lying in world dominance.

Same source - colonial possessions

Above: I believe the mustache to be a European influence.

Below: Note the spectacles with darkened lenses, i.e. sunglasses.

This native chieftain has outfitted his retainers in a homemade copy of Prussian guard hussar uniforms.

Same source - more colonial troops

Above: Only one of the native soldiers is wearing the white NCO uniform.

Above: Meinertzhagen, doing intelligence gathering for the KAR before WWI, disparaged German askari marksmanship, saying they were trained for only shorter ranges.
