The Army of Independent Madagascar

Post  Sean on Fri 28 May 2010, 2:25 pm

In the 1890s France invaded and occupied the country of Madagascar. Prior to this the monarchy had a regular army for defence of the nation.
I have very little detailed knowledge of this army, apart from some distant pictures. Can anyone help with more information, perhaps on uniform colours and so forth?

The article "Pith helmet" in Wikipedia has a photo of a white Madagascar pith helmet with a metal front plate.

I have some information about their army.

First of all, we have this picture of king Radama I in campaign. There, we can see his soldiers dressed in double breasted coatees, white pants and shakos. Their uniforms were british cast-offs, so they were probably red, or maybe artillery blue.

The next information I have is this picture of an 1865 general and this one depicting malagasy officers (I lost the date, but it was from around the 1850s/60s).

And from the period of the french war, I found this uniform guide at the "colonial wars" yahoo group:
"Taken from "Savage & Soldier" Painting Guide, by Lynn Bodin
ARTILLERY:
Lavoisot's Battery: White hat w yellow trim around baase, black coat w yelloe piping, blue trousers w yelloe stripe. brown shoes and belts.
Grave's Bty.: Brown hat, black jacket & trousers, latter w red stripe, brown belts & shoes.
OFFICERS: Black, blue or white cap. Blue or red jacket w lots of gold or silver lace trim. Black trousers w red stripe. Black, brown, or white belts. Black boots.
REGULARS:
Royal Guards: White coat, black trousers, & brown hat.
Queen's Royal Cadets: White turban and shirt. Skirt red or blue w white stripes. Spears and hide shields.
Sihanaka Regt.: Pink tunic, white trousers, and hat covered with lemur skin (According to my reasearch lemur furs were white with small black spots.)
Merina Regts.(6 regts.): All white uniforms with red or blue pointed cuffs. Hat brown or blue. Some "other troops"(?) had blue tunics, white trousers, and brown or blue hats. Belts were black w brass buckles. The hat is hard to describe-- sort of an upside down fez, with the top having a front to reat dip.
IRREGULARS: Straw hat. White or striped lamba (cloak) and skirt."

And also those pictures:
Merina troops in ambush 1896
Merina artillery 1896
Merina troops 1896
Merina troops raising the alarm 1896

I hope you all find it usefull.

The blue coated individual at right in the last illustration of the post above (Merina troops raising the alarm 1896) seems to wear the uniform of a French unit, the Tirailleurs Sakalades?
