Castlemane Light Dragoons

Post  Greatscott on Fri 30 Apr 2010, 6:54 pm

Has anyone a photo or drawing of the uniform of this unit c1860?

It appears that a local unit I am researching (Otago Light Horse) based their uniform on this units one.

Cheers

Thanks Sean

Do you have a date for this uniform. The newspaper (ODT 26th November 1864) just gives an extract from the meeting of the Otago Light Horse which describes the uniform as being the same as the example (Castlemaine Light Dragoons) supplied for the tenderer's to veiw. It was described as being scarlet with yellow facings and dark blue trousers with a yellow stripe.

The impression I have (though not saying so in the article) was that one of the men who was joining had served in the light dragoons and was in posession of his old uniform.

However no one ever said research was easy, eh?

Thanks

Graham

This was an early 1860s uniform.
I believe the one you describe is that adopted by the consolidated Victorian Volunteer Light Horse.
It was a scarlet Garribaldi jacket with blue overalls. Yellow distinctions, but not facings, and stripes. A kepi was worn as headdress.
The jacket type fits in with what the NZ volunteer regs state for the period.

Could be although description states Castlemaine Light Dragoons and refers to a sample jacket as opposed to other units uniform references that usually specify Garibaldi tunics (although they were very common at this time). The Volunteers regs came in in 1866 and by that time the unit had disbanded. Unfortunatly the only image we have found may or may not be of the unit.

Thanks for your help though. I presume the distinctions are the braiding around the palston of the Garibaldi tunic. Were the trouser stripes single or double?

This is an early illustration, it has some old sizing problems but the detail is accurate.
The double-breasted piping was common to most Garibaldi jackets of the time, and was worn in NZ.
Double yellow overall stripes.
Later a red and then white sun helmet were worn.
Hope this helps.
