San Marino Militia from the late 1930s

This is the postcard, and an Italian magazine article, that was used as the basis for an earlier illustration.

Quite elegant, but I doubt they would've been very serviceable in the field.

The San Marino Militia and the Council Guard are primarily ceremonial. The Gendarmeria and the Fortress Guard are the only operational components (in addition to their ceremonial duties), the Fortress Guard acts as the border guard since I don't believe San Marino is party to the Schengen Agreement (which looks like it's days are numbered anyways). Their is also a civilian police force separate from the Gendarmeria.

Hello,

does this photo acually show the Army Militia , Gendarmerie or Fortress Guard uniform?

"Uniforms of the World" and "Police uniforms of the World" by F G Blakeslee didn't cover San Marino.

Its the militia or Republican Guard
Blakeslee led the way in some regards but didn't have the resources we have today so didn't cover everything.

Hello all,

just looking on the Axis History Forum website and see a couple of Seans San Marino illustrations.

1936 Militia

1944 Security force.

or just put San Marino in the search box.

Does anyone know when the 1944 blue uniform replaced the earlier grey one?

Ranjit.

Hi,
the blue uniform looks like a R S I uniform, i would guess it was introduced in 1943.
