Does anyone know what colour the helmets were painted? Khaki-brown or grey? Pat.

Take your pick Pat, I've seen illustrations in,
Khaki for combined operations and naval beach parties along with battle dress, a lighter shade for the far east.
Dark Grey for North Atlantic and even plain metal,
Regards

Thanks wfad ,i would guess the grey colour for on -shore UK service guarding the ports. There is a RN reenactment group(which i recently chanced upon) called "The Grey Funnel Line" its website has a gallery with colour photos showing the grey helmet.Pat.

RN on Shore Duty Shanghai 1937

Hi Pat,
Came across this photo which I thought might be of interest, it doesn't answer the question of what colour the helmet was but does show that it was used between the wars when in hostile areas.

Here we have a show of strength of the Royal Navy to protect British Interests in the International Settlement in Shanghai , China in 1937.

That's a lot of sailors, must have been more than one ship's company.

Hope it is of interest.
Best Regards,
Les
