Self Defense Corps, Japan, 1952

I've no idea who they are or what they stood for, but it wasn't long after the war so who knows.

Perhaps a khaki drill shirt with civil tie?
Nice emblem

I believe this was the 1945 - 54 name of the Japanese National Police Agency.

It looks like they are doing some sort of riot control or baton/self defense training.

Self Defence Corps of Japan

Post  Les-Art on Fri 21 Aug 2009, 2:40 am

Hi Guys,
Looked at this photo closely and the arm patch does not represent the Police of Japan.
If you put the title into wikipedia there is a good explanation of clubs being set up in Japan after WW2 to enable the local populace to get back into martial arts without going against the convention for banning them in having weapons. Kendo was banned for a while. Although these clubs did excist within Police Prefectures as sporting clubs.
The police still had the same uniforms they wore before the war and didn't change their National Police title. I need to dig out my World Police book for the actual title.
The dates quoted by Chris would be correct for the overseeing of Japan by the Allied powers and the period which banned the use of swords and martial arts weapons in favour of just letting people use 'BIG STICKS'!!! Very Happy
Is this any help?
Best Regards,
Les
