Ethiopian Army 1952/3

Post  wfrad on Thu 23 Apr 2009, 2:12 am

Here are the Ethiopian army ranks from around 1952/3. The booklet from Sarge Booker differs from other examples for the period, namely the rank stats show what appears to be three plain points with the other three of a petal design.
Other examples show what is in effect two triangles forming the six points of a star. This should though give a general idea of the ranks and I may do a chart of the other variants later.

The other charts are on the Uniform insignia site at http://uniforminsignia.net/.

Love it.
Rare and interesting.
Surprisingly British, I thought the US influence would have been stronger

British Empire forces had liberated Ethiopia from Italian rule ten years before and UK influence (in the form of a Military Training Mission) was still strong in the early 1950s. A distinctive feature of Ethiopian uniforms was the retention of the topee (cork sun helmet) long after it had been discarded elsewhere. The Ethiopian contingent serving in Korea (1951-54) wore this old fashioned headdress when away from the front line and the Imperial Guard wore it for ordinary duties in Addis Ababa until the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selaisse in 1974.

That's a splendid photo wfrad - wonder what happened to the uniforms (and the beautiful horses) when the Marxist Dreg regime took over. The Ethiopian units serving in Korea were also part of the Imperial Guard and, as mentioned above, wore a plain khaki version of the tropical helmet shown, with British style battledress when away from the actual fighting. An almost identical helmet was worn by their predecessors when opposing the Italian invasion of 1936.

I could only find the odd ref to them, the photo in the link was the best I could find and that was more by luck than design.
Looking for something totally unrelated to uniforms.
