MPs back prosecution for fraudsters who falsely pose as decorated veterans
The Commons Defence Committee is backing plans for a crackdown on 'Walter Mitty' types who buy and wear medals, causing 'damage to the military honours system.
Fraudsters who buy military medals and falsely claim to be veterans should be prosecuted, MPs say today.

The Commons Defence Committee is backing plans for a crackdown on “Walter Mitty” types who pose as decorated heroes.

It says the deceitful wearing of decorations and medals is “insulting to the rightful recipients of these awards and damaging to the military honours system”. Tory MP Gareth Johnson is spearheading the Awards for Valour (Protection) Bill, which MPs will today support.

Committee chairman, Julian Lewis, a Tory MP, said: “Military impostors commit a specific harm that requires a specific criminal sanction. Other countries have sought to maintain these sanctions, whilst the UK has foolishly disposed of them.
