British Uniforms fm 1680

Post  wfrad on Mon 14 Nov 2016, 7:57 am

These two pages are from Discovering British Military Uniform by Arthur Taylor.
I believe that I've more or less managed to colour them reasonably accurately. †
There's little reliable information regarding uniforms before the publication of the 1742 book 'A Representation of the Cloathing of His Majesty's Household and all the Forces upon the Establishments of Great Britian and Ireland.

Although there are differences of opinion regarding the early uniforms, depending on the who you read I've more or less tried to keep to the guide within the text of this book.
I have however added a second grenadier cap for the 3rd of Foot †who prior to 1751 are recordorde ase havine a blue flap. †Changed in the 1751 orders to red.

The drawings leave a little to be desired as regards accuracy and my colouring which hasnít helped.
The mitre cap braiding is a little off but gives a good general idea.

As for the 2nd Dragoon, the text states buff for the waist coat and facing rather than blue although I believe that the facings for the regiment did change to buff in the 1751 clothing warrant.

Barthorpís British Cavalry Uniforms has a similar image of a 2nd DG of the same period with buff facings and waist coat on plate 6 image 16, although in the appendix the facings are listed as blue and no mention of any changes of the 1751 warrant that Iíve noticed.

Barthorpís †has listed it as a Pte. 2nd Dragoon Guards 1751, although in 1751 the regiment changed itís name from Royal Regiment of North British Dragoons [also known as the Scots Regiment of White Horses] to the 2nd [or Royal North British] Regiment of Dragoons, I donít believe at that time it was called the 2nd [Or Queens] Dragoon Guards.

Lawson in his history of the British Army also gives the facings for the 2DG as blue for 1751,
Smithermanís image of a 1743 Trooper of the Royal North British Dragoons (Scotís Greys) has blue †facings and waistcoat.

The Highland Regiment kilt is guess work, various paintings of the period do little to help so Iíve just added something along the lines of a Black Watch tartan.

For figure 23 Iíve used the Mackenzie of Seaforth tartan, or tried too, rather than the Black Watch or Government tartan. †The Mackenzie of Seaforth is basically the Black Watch tartan with the addition of vertical and horizontal red and white lines.
It depends on what source you use as to which tartan is named. †I believe that the Mackenzie seems more logical, the regiment was raised in 1778 by Kenneth Mackenzie Earl of Seaforth and Chief of the Clan Mackenzie. †In the 1700ís it would have being quite likely for a Clan Chief to be authorised use the clan tartan.
Also not certain about the cap plate for the 78th's grenadiers so I used a standard pattern.

There are coloured illustrations of the 25th of Foot and The Bucks in volume IV of Lawsonís ĎA History of the Uniforms of the British Army'.

For the Blues [38],
Breeches were buff leather.
The dress pantaloons for officers had two gold stripes down the outer seams, edged with scarlet cloth and having a ĹĒ light between.
The undress dark grey overalls, had two scarlet stripes down each seam.
