Han-Na Chang

Post  wfrad on Mon 11 Aug 2014, 2:25 am

Mick Hanna of Al Jazeera was interviewing Han-Na Chang who for the past year has been music director of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.
He seemed to be uncertain of what he should call her, the title of Maestro didn't appear to sit well.
Although the word itself can be used for male or female it's one of those titles rarely associated with the fairer sex.
How many of us could truthfully say on hearing someone shout Maestro, would we think female rather than male.

maestra

Thanks, I stand corrected.
Wasn't quite sure of the female term, or if there was one, was it used.
In my ignorance I thought maestra translated as teacher and maestro as principle or Master.
I haven't had to read music in a long time, so my very limited Italian is long forgotten....

And remember when standing up to applaud, use "Bravo!" and "Brava!" appropriately.

Bravo

So do mean that if an English person were to shout bravo, they could be either calling them thugs, or shouting praise?
How the language has changed over the years, do fancy a quick turn of the gay gordans?
Or maybe take a spin to the fly-over where nothing is flying or spinning.
