Ottoman Turkey

Post  wfrad on Wed 29 Aug 2012, 10:13 am

Ottoman Turkey,
Here's some print from an 1913 book on the Ottoman/Turk army.
There are twenty eight pages in total to post.
The book has 218 pages and is around 13MB in PDF format.
Unfortunately I've lost the link.

Here are some plates from an Italian army manual from 1911. I'd love to see all of them!

Thanks for that super pictures to Cristiano Campos"

I've never seen those before, fantastic find.
So many old manuals never see the light of day.
Has anyone ever seen the whole manual before?

Ottoman 1861

Post  wfrad on Sun 02 Sep 2012, 12:43 am

For the Ottoman ranks 1861 seemed to be the starting point of genuine order and regimentation along the European stile of uniform.
Looking at the Crimea it appeared for illustrations and some British observations, which may be bias, that the officers rank was hardly worn and their uniforms a mixture of old and new.
The other ranks insignia was also confusing using the old metal grade badges and modern rank.

Most of the information for this chart is due too information received from Christiano Compus,
who along with his own knowledge also forwarded me charts by Dr Chris Flahety.

Uniform was of the French cut with cuffs either pointed or Brandenburg, collars red for infantry.
Apparently the translations of many of the illustrations shown previously from the 1913 are misleading due to the difficulty in translating the old Persian/Turkish text.
Finally I've named the ranks in English rather than miss out any text characters that could change the original Turkish meaning.
